I make all my travel bookings on the interweb. But if you feel uncomfortable with this you should visit a travel agent. They have brochures and all sorts of stuff, as well as maps. They should help you find somewhere between Brisbane and Mackay. Also Lonely Planet have good holidaying publications and these include common local phrases. Although being a local, you probably already know about them, ay? As for nice people... most Qlders are nice people so you should find plenty.
