Verbosity aka ear bashing

January 21 2011

Why does he it seem on the forum that some people are soooooo verbose. It's almost like they have to win the argument. They are not satisfied to state their opinion and to give others room to state theirs. I have read a few lately and it becomes like verbal ping pong, the original post lost in all the petty backward and forwarding between the antagonists. Honestly, those who engage in it - your not that entertaining and with all due respect, the opinion, once stated it's just hashed, rehashed, warmed, rehashed again..and each time we have to listen to it, it loses more and more of it's flavour. Be satisfied to have your say and then please, leave the ear bashing mentality at the door.

I don't think there are too many verbose people here, I can certainly think of one of hand, but so what, thats their style. I have to admit i don't understand what verbose ( My understanding is that verbose means to say something simple in a long and convoluted manner maybe I am wrong, always happy to be corrected) , has to do with winning an argument. Politicians are certainly fond of that, but merely to bamboozle and lie to us.Maybe they think their opinion is correct, as long as they argue their case with reason and don't get personal then go for it, thats called debate, doesn't that kind of go hand in hand with what a forum is?Don't you think you are conducting an earbashing of your own just by posting this.Cheers Nev

You know.. with that uncle who catches you and talks your head off.. you don't even listen just standing there nodding... and then the awkward silence when its yor turn to respond but you havent got a clue what's the subject of discussion. Too true... but, even though you are elderly, you can just skim like the rest of us after all. It's permitted! Don't mention it to anyone... but some posts I just don't read... and certain participants in particular are difficult to read ... some verbose.. some might have captured my interest but are just difficult without trying to correct the grammar punctuation and spelling so I just ignore them..... but do you see me complain? No Granny ~ not me! I no complain! I take my valium and I smile biding my time until that pretty nurse comes back around to my ward! HUgsStalky

You don't have to agree with everyone and no one has to agree with your opinions. This is an open forum and if you don't like what is being said then don't follow the thread. This is about debate not a yes man/womans club, this is not high school where everyone has to agree with each other or else. Learn to accept the opinions of others and move on, wether you agree with them or not.

I confess, I describe myself as being verbose all the time. Those who know me well will agree. However, I think you can be verbose without losing the ability to be respectful of and receptive to, other people's opinion. The two are not mutually exclusive.

We can be as verbose or as bombastic as we like. It is our right as the younger generation and if the OP has trouble with the mindless chatter of us youngsters, she is free to sign out and stop following the threads that annoy her. Maybe a Nanna nap might cheer up her grumpy disposition? Or maybe as Stalky has already suggested, take the valium like a good girl and stop saving them to sell at bingo nights.

I have done a bit of ear-bashing in my time but not without good reason. Hate having to sort out who made what quote out of a long list and trying to find the comment at the end. Definitely dislike the great long-winded waffle about absolutely nothing that goes off into their own world so I skip them. On the plus side, sometimes those "ping pong" type arguments are quite entertaining.

Well, we all have to be something - don't we? I much prefer adjectives myself. Thanks for your critical analysis, it is greatly disposable.

Nana, It's been a while since I've written... I've told you more than once-I like paranormal experiences not being made to feel paranoid. I'm sure it was your brother Uncle Roy the marine biologist that said: "if you don't chum the waters lass-you won't ever get to see the sharks". You've not worked out yet that I enjoy the baiting and watching how the beasties attack? Are they merciful or cruel? Do they do it with any skill, strength, or with luck more than any ability? Some hunt in packs, not for efficiency more of a case that they could never manage a kill on their own. And then there are the itty bitty creatures that are satisfied with a little feed on the leftovers if they can manage it... You know me Nana-I love discovering a creature's true nature... You have to make a lot of noise to lure them out-be patient-provoke them into a desired response and then back them into a corner to see it's teeth or witness it fall apart. Cruel? No purposely lying to someone's face to gain advantage is to possess a calculated cruelty beyond anything an anonymous assembly of words could ever manage. These words typed on a forum-similar to graffiti scribbled on a wall-or on lost pieces of paper from a notebook-consider them if you will, yet you are neither forced to read or abide by them...they are just snapshots of someone's ideas-good,bad or otherwise. I wonder if they could mean me? I do feel like saying "if you don't like the grammar or spelling how about we get together at your next book signing Henry Miller or should I just refer to you from now on as Fyodor?" Personally, I'm too busy living and planning an amazing life than focus on my gold star for punctuation in the rhp forum. I understand that is what proof readers do-deal with those small details whilst the writers get creative. Right now I'd rather lick, suck and savour the marrow and juices from the bones of life's banquet-as you know salads aren't for me, I like things of substance and adequate sustenance. This is just one of the dining rooms I've visited-and I really do want to try it all before I go. I had thought great things of the Minion-turned out to be a bit like the voyage of the Mignon actually-not safe to be the youngest in the crew at all, maybe that's why I was set ashore-he knew what was coming up? I wonder is it because you had that brief affair with Orwell that you are a big fan of the "newspeak", I'm not sure why you see this as a tribute when he was well known to be quite a prolifiic letter writer. Let it go Nana, I'm sorry you never heard from him again, but he's long gone and we're sick of hearing about it. We all know that his resignation at the BBC had more to do with ongoing racy shenanigans with a young lady in the canteen, than his wanting to write Animal Farm, it also explains why Uncle Arthur slurps his tea out of saucers. I'm disappointed to say the least-as I'd have thought you'd enjoy reading fiction-considering you'd told everyone including Pop-your "premmie" baby born six months to the day you were married weighed in at 9.5 pounds. x NymphetamineDrm

Personally, I don't think you did much of anything...other than as noted by TE being deemed disposable, and I like subjective adjectives too. | Oh well...since I am reading and not hearing any noise (odd...hearing voices as I type would make me wonder) maybe just maybe...the joke was not a joke and ill intended even as bait for a bottom feeder that came at your own expense. | Psstttt...Nana Hooters? I know you will claim conscious comedy for this but the phrase is hook, line and sinker? On the other hand...you are right. Thanks for the not so great laugh at your own expense and being your own fake sterling example. K-mart has great sales...don't they?

but all you intellectual,l verbose types on here who rail together at anybody who dares comment on your great desire to hog forum space probably don't know how to play..nor to know when someone is taking the piss... lol

  • RHP

To do this effectively it is better to see the piss-taker's face. Nuance in voice and expression can not generally be determined by text and therefore sarcasm...aka...taking the piss...often comes across as insults. l We who 'hog forum space' do know how to play. Maybe we have our own agenda as it appears you do as well. We all play by different rules and surely, one would consider this post as hogging the forum. That puts you squarely with both feet in the camp of the verbose, bombastic forum hogs.

Hey SweetCharity...doing a bit of digging huh. Do you pull hair too??? To those who commented and whom are the frequent 'verbose' members to whom I refer, you remind me of the playground where it looks like most of you have not grown from - purile, unable to accept others who differ from your 'gang' mentality and egotistical enough to believe anyone gives a toss about what you have to say on this or any subject..lol.. It indeed 'cracks' me up to see you all running around having your own little hissy fit when someone has the temerity to comment on it. To those who found some truth in what I said, thank you for having the courage to say in the face of the conceivable backlash that going contrary to 'popular' opinion seems to generate on here.
