Recycling Toys

February 07 2011

sex

Chatting to a friend today about various toys and he mentioned that he'd never use the same toy (eg, vibrator ) on more than one woman. I was a little surprised. I suggested he could clean them with a special toy cleaner and even sterilise them in hot water. Seems like a waste to spend all that money and potentially use it only once. Vibrators like the WeVibe are designed for males and females to use together. Does that mean I should buy a new WeVibe (costs approx $120) EVERY time I want to use one with a different man ? Have I missed a golden rule of sex etiquette ? Cheers, Miss Saturn

I think it is more the fact that his partners finding it difficult to come to terms with a toy that is not freshy taken from an unused box or wrapping. I would also think that if I was in the same situation I'd find it similarly hard to use something that has been in/on somone elses body. Why not suggest that he asks the sexual partner to bring their toys along to the party that they may have?Have a great sexperienceStew

is on your skin but there's a condom protecting him so if the normal sterilisation processes would kill any skin-type infections maybe it'd be ok? . maybe it's more the mental factor of unwrapping a new toy in front of the girl? "look what I chose SPECIALLY FOR YOU" otherwise he could just put condoms on his toys. I only let guys use my toys on me, if they wanted to bring their own i'd rather SEE the condom on it than just TRUST that he'd sterilised them well. cos all boys are lazy and don't know how to clean...OOPS! I made a stupid generalisation! Please commence eating me alive now!! :P xx Sarah

Quoting 'curiousnewgirl78' cos all boys are lazy and don't know how to clean...OOPS! I made a stupid generalisation! Please commence eating me alive now!! :P xx Sarah Methinks it is a setup. I'll bite though. hehe . You know what you've done wrong and there's no need for me to explain it to you so let's get straight to the punishment. . First up a bit of a scrub in the tub to make sure we're clean for dinner. Now my Mum told me not to play with my food.... Meh!... What did she know? I'll lick it, poke it, prod it, breathe on it, nibble at it and bury my face in my meal. Whilst I'm sure you've been prepared fantastically perhaps a sauce or two may be used, a Jaffa chocolate sauce would be great. And finally if there's plenty left over I'll always go back for seconds, thirds, fourths and more. . Hmmm now I don't know who's the bigger glutton for punishment. . As for toys I've never played with them as a big kid and I'd love to play with someone else if they're willing to share their toys. My report cards always said I played well with others. . Cheers Rusty

I have two degrees in microbiology and I worked as a food technologist for 15+ years. I can tell you this. Toy cleaner is great at REDUCING the bugs on the surface of your fave toy. It will not remove all of them. The plastics and rubbers most toys are made of are porus and this makes it impossible to completely sterilise them. The only toy that I can think of that would be able to be sterilised properly would be a glass dildo. The only safe way to share toys is to use a condom on them. Even if you only use them on yourself they can still retain bacteria and yeasts from your vagina and cause UTI's. I don't need to say that backdoor toys should remain exclusively for backdoor use no interchanging.

Good idea Curious.... of course the WeVibe with a condom makes sense. I"d never thought of explaining that to a guy. Maybe it's just the mental idea of them putting their cock where another cocks been ? But that sounds rather silly doesn't it unless the guy only has sex with virgins ? Seriously... how long do germs stay alive on a toy ? If I take someone else's toy and run it under hot water or maybe even leave it in warm soapy water for the two hours of "pre" foreplay than I'd think it'd be fine. So what is the risk of catching an STI from someones toy ? Cheers, Saturn

of a garage sale I went to once where I was rummaging through a box of bits and pieces and came across a vibrator that still had pubic hairs stuck to it... That was the last garage sale I ever went to. :-P WP

To achieve a microbiological sterilization autoclave is seen as one of the effective methods. Chemical sterilization is also another method, however chemicals are often corrosive in nature and with plastic, rubber and silicone toys this would possibly destroy them. The most effective chemicals are possibly chlorine and sodium hydroxide.A couple of hours in soapy water is not going to sterilize much at all I'm afraid. Toy cleaners, well it would depend on the active ingredients and the contaminant itself as to the effectiveness.Play safe.Lets

Quoting 'Miss_Saturn' Seriously... how long do germs stay alive on a toy ? If I take someone else's toy and run it under hot water or maybe even leave it in warm soapy water for the two hours of "pre" foreplay than I'd think it'd be fine. So what is the risk of catching an STI from someones toy? | Sorry, gorgeous girl...but it is a proven medical fact (I read this on the internet, it must be true) that you should only use them once on one partner then either throw them away or send them to a certified recycler. I don't know about the certified bit but I will send you my address as I am happy to recycle all those nasty used toys you might have laying around. Serious, bin them.. | ...or send them to me. | Nice try, huh? Actually, just a good general cleaning after use in a hot soapy detergent solution should get all the cooties off your WEDs (weapons of erotic delight) and just be sure to clean any of the places where there might be little crevices with a brush or better still, take them apart if you need to and clean them up. You should be good to go...or come, as the case may be. | Most viruses in the STD/STI group are not transmitted outside of the body for very long and hence the old excuse of "I got it off the toilet seat" never held up in court. Note I did say most...there are a few but not really within the realm of what you are probably thinking and some are only invasive via direct blood to blood contact. Cleanliness is next to happiness and you should keep your WEDs tidy in between games just like a good golfer will always clean his/her clubs. | Now then, if you are in party mode and happen to move from one playground to another in somebody else's fun factory...or even a couple of your own from point A to point B, you could be in for a surprise. Like the golfer...change clubs, and remember your drive for show but putt for the dough. | If someone is precious about being number two or whatever...a couple of thoughts spring to mind. The first is to tell them to bring their own damn party favours in a brown paper bag and you want to watch the seal break on the package. The other is just to get a really elegant looking box, say in a Tasmanian oak cushioned with silk...for some reason I like the deep purple I have in my toy box and...opps, I meant I have heard that some people have a toy box that looks pretty slick. | Better still, if you want to recycle your toys just give me a call... | ...I do some of my best work onsite. A toy tradie?

Besides I bet you share more germs kissing than you would share on a 'reasonably cleaned' sex toy.

Besides I bet you share more germs kissing than you would share on a 'reasonably cleaned' sex toy. | I think you are right on both counts...and whilst I do have some good mild detergents, lots of warm water and a scrub brush...I sold my autoclave on eBay last week. Damn...how stupid was that? Wait...I do have a microwave. | What do you think a lap in either the autoclave or the microwave might do to a few hundred dollars worth of silicone. latex and copper wire? Talk about a rather unusual shape....and sorry, but if you can't get the last microbiotic mini-bacteria off the PE or PVC...you might want to avoid a chemical like chlorine that will penetrate the plastic. Thrill of a lifetime... | ...chlorine bleach on your what?

Jean, Was merely commenting on the topic of sterilization, not to the worthiness or otherwise of it.As GirlTuesday indicated, if you don't wish to catch anything, wrap yourself in cotton wool. Life is here to be lived not to be wrapped up in bump proof boxes. Personally, just be careful, clean as you will. Be as careful with your toys as you would yourself, or if not and in doubt - throw it out ....................or give it to midnight............lol Lets

We are all adults (if only in age!!!) we can all make our own decisions. Sometimes it is worth spending some time finding out about the boring stuff from a reliable source (like the internet hehe) to prevent later regrets. Maybe its an occupational hazard but I just can't be all blase about the nasty little buggers.

The stuff I use on clients gets covered in condoms and any tools like floggers get cleaned and disinfected after each use. I keep a separate set of toys and tools for my use only. And everthing gets cleaned with a solution of either chlorine bleach or dettol. Don't share uncovered toys.

Damn….I made a huge mistake offering to clean and recycle toys on this site. Fact is, in the last few days over 200 of the things have arrived here in brown envelopes and I have been so busy that I have not had a chance to unwrap them or get the damn things out of the garage. With the heat and humidity, this is not nice at all so no more. I am just going to flog them off for whatever I can get for them…cut my loses and run. Okay, I know that it’s close to Valentine’s so as a public service announcement to all you love birds…do NOT buy a weird looking, vibrating Chia pet online for your sweetheart… | …even if the start bid is only $0.99
