'I shouldn't be alive'......

August 26 2014

So, just the other day I was looking at myself in the mirror while shaving, and it occurred to me that I was bloody lucky to still be on planet Earth, given the amount of stuff I've been up to over time! My entire adult working life has been spent in occupations regarded as dangerous by most, but even before then..... I've been in car accidents (including a number of horrendous near misses), fallen off roofs, fallen out of a helicopter, been stabbed, shot at, been trapped up a mountain on a glacier that gave me frostbite, bitten by various types of wildlife, belted over the head with a bar stool, had my nose broken three times - God, the list goes on!!! Oh, and falling asleep in a freezing paddock while drunk (I was 16, ok?). I reckon I'm lucky to still be here enjoying life - anyone else had similar realisations? - Posted from rhpmobile

I call that a typical weekend! I think most people, if they live a life of grasping experiences and opportunities with both hands, have had more than a few close calls. Ive had a couple from your list... knife, stuck overnight in the snow, bitten by animals (including a VERY close call with a blue ringed octopus and a shark) chased by a bull, chased by 2 bikies, hitch hiked in Zimbabwe, had a pane of glass break over my head, and lived in England and survived (the food) I also have a habit of jumping overboard 30kms out to sea to take photos of marlin and sharks etc.... I love an adventurous life.

One thing I've learnt though. Be careful of what you say when your girlfriend is in the kitchen. Way too many potential missiles. One of my exs owned a 303. I'm not sure how I survived that relationship.

I would call it gratitude of an amazing adventurous life. You say you shouldn't be alive OP - to honest it makes me sad reading that. There are people living in third world countries who would live your life yesterday, today and tomorrow. :) I've been hanging out here in Fiji the last few weeks with locals. Take my daughters best friend for instance. He's an amazing person, never tried carrot cake (but he did the other day and loved it) or eaten many foods we eat - just eats very very basic food staples. He works to support his mum, sister and ill grandfather. Never left his local town and yesterday we took him overnight to Fiji's capital. We caught a 3 1/2 bus ride and all he wanted to do was swim in the local pool. I asked why and he reason was "I want to swim in clean water" The smile his face said it all - he was so grateful of this experience we gave him. We were also taken on a tour (by another of daughters friend) off what UNICEF has done to local community and families who were homeless and set them up in living mobile homes/hutches. Words can not explain. And here I was thinking prior my holiday "I've lived a lucky life - more fortunate I say now and full of gratitude" By the sounds of things you've had a great and interesting life - don't take it for granted is all I am saying. We live in an amazing rich country full of experiences. while some people in this world don't know what that is like. Foxy

fortunately I have escaped with only being stitched up and broken bones from mostly playing sport. The only time I escaped impending death was when I was a stupid kid and tried to commit suicide. I have been threatened with death on a quite a few occasions but nothing... people are full of shit.

You ladies ever watch the Australia's funniest home videos? It is always the men doing stupid things. Women are far too smart. Although I have also had a knife pulled on me now that I think about it, been taking into the desert in Jordon by people who I should not have been with, had a joint offered to us by complete strangers in an oasis in the Sahara Desert when I was in Morrocco and then my girlfriend and I decided it was a good idea to go sleep in the desert so we wandered off with our sleeping bags.... lucky we came to our senses and decided to go back before we got lost, mind you I was freaking out because I thought the palm trees were coming to get us, have swum in massive storms and huge waves (young and dumb).............. sure there are more.

16 operations. Died twice on operating table. Knocked out and amnesia, horse ridding accident, one if many. Held at gun point, one in an airport once by a guard in Israel, who was supposed to be our protector, but had other things on his mind. Bogged in as desert in Israel. Bitten by a red back nearly by a king brown. Kicked buy a horse. Bitten twice by dogs, one bit out my right cheek. The damage done by some humans is the worst kind.

negating all the macho stuff (there is a fine line between macho and stupid), A career in the army puts you at deaths door almost daily even when you are NOT in combat. I recall me and my army buddies on a 72 hour pass in the alps, and we decided to go mountain climbing (without ropes or any gear). Can you say DUH? didn't even CONSIDER the sheer drops offs. I was safety NCO on a tank firing range in Germany. we had a 'safety pit', were the tanks puled in to, and we made sure 'all weapons were on electrical and mechanical safe' before they came off the range. one tank pulls in to the pit with the main gun pointed the wrong direction (AT US), and as it swung past us, the main gun went off, just past the windshield of my Hummv. we had concussive nose bleeds, and were deaf, plush flash blinded (2am), but other wise ok. THAT was close. close calls in the desert on pretty much a daily basis.then another career offshore, and more daily disasters. I need a break!!! all that aside, you can walk out your door and get hit by a cement truck

I got on the back of a motorbike with someone, the saying "seen my life flash before my eyes" well I actually did, have never been on the back of a bike since. Had a horrifying car accident about 16 years ago, seatbelt saved my life that day....thankful for my life to say the least......💋. Twisted, you ever been to a pub in the middle of bum fuck, because I've hit a couple of drunk blokes with bar stools over the years.......😜

When I was 18 I came off bike only a few hundred metres from girlfriend (now mrs) doorstep. Spent next 18 months trying to walk again. Silver lining was while fixing me up they found a kidney problem that would have been a disaster if left unchecked. Did require a long list of operations but all good once done. I do have a bit of a list of stupid though. A few near misses when rock climbing Rear ended on motorbike.... Love gravel rash (only time I was stupid enough not to wear jacket...) Split my thumb length wise with a very fine angle grinder blade Put a freshly sharpened machete through my foot But hey: chicks dig scars right? Oh and yes I still ride today, no point living life in fear!

but no real danger. I love adventure but I have an immense fear of pain, so I lean just beyond my edge but never hang over enough to be in real danger. Or maybe I've been lucky. I mountain-biked down that road in Bolivia known as the most dangerous road in the world. I was on the left hand edge, where it drops off, and hit a patch of wet gravel. My front wheel jack-knifed for what seemed like an eternity but was a millisecond at most. Still ... my heart stopped. We'd just passed a memorial to the only tourist who'd ever gone over the edge (plenty of locals, sadly) so I felt incredibly grateful my wheel stayed on solid ground. Not life threatening, just a fright :) To be honest, coming back up the road I the minivan was much, much worse - the single-most frightening experience of my life. It's a hellish road and I'm a sook, so I was beside myself. Another time, also in Bolivia, we visited a place called Valle de la Luna. All of the locals warned us off because of the packs of vicious dogs who roamed the area. We went anyway (after a one-hour local bus ride were the bus stalled up-hill and hubby and the other men had to get out and push it!). It was an extraordinary place to visit and yes, we were trailed the whole time by the dogs, snarling and barking at us nearby. We had a trick that kept them away, so again, no real danger just a healthy dose of fear for me. That one time as a very-beginner skier when I found myself at the top of a black diamond run with no option but to go down ... And a bunch of others. But I think Meeka is right. Women often have that in-built sense of caution that holds us back from being really bold/dumb (however you want to look at it :)). Many years of working over 100 hours a week is probably the closest I've ever come to truly shortening my life. - Posted from rhpmobile

Lost in Queensland bush, 200kph motorcycle crash caused and possibly saved by alcohol, storms at sea on yachts, very nearly was man overboard. Accidental drug OD. Bathurst gaol. That'll do :D There are 105 males born for every 100 females, this thread should tell you why. Nature is smart.

Try to lead a fairly careful existence, but had a few close calls.Nearly drowned in the surf a couple of times; been in a hospital whilst there was an armed robbery and seen it all unfold; been bitten by a white-tailed spider (thankfully with no repercussions), but the one which has been closest of all was being diagnosed in 2000 with the rarest and deadliest form of leukaemia for my age range, and being told that I was looking at about 4 - 5 years to go. Not pleasant news to receive. Still on daily chemo for it, and so far so good. (got to go for another check up tomorrow). Been in a few car accidents over the years and other things, but nothing thankfully too severe. Tall

... with the normal breaks , loss of bark and being patched up.. Not alot.. A mate and I were confronted by some drunken locals in Vanuatu once.. was one of them fight or flight situation' we both managed to go OK before they stopped and offered to buy us a beer' that was welcoming.. Unintentionally foiled a hold up a few years back, a matter of being at the wrong place at the wrong time. Anyway' they ran off and the Police caught up with them who later told me they were both armed.. ' Apart from that.. nothing too bad....

I must concur with twisted, this has got me thinking of my close calls as well. To name just a few close ones: 1. Almost trampeded by an elephant in africa had i not got out of my jeep and ran for the hills2. held to gunpoint by pirates in the carribean3. survived a great white shark attack off the beach of perth who took a nice size bite out of my board4. i've been stabed twice by drunks5. i've been shot in the U.S by rappers who thought i was p daddy6. skydived and just got the 2nd parachute to open before 1000meters7. held hostage by the taliban once in 2007, i escaped with the help of the hostages daughter who freed me8. jumped out of a plane at 11000ft altitude only to be saved by maverick in his jet9. fought off a crazy lion once to save a family10. almost got sideswiped head on by an out of control car that flipped it more then 5 times Yep, its good to be alive still!

Disclaimer: All stories depicted above may or may have not happened. This is just in case ASIO have the keyword 'taliban' on their radar. For those still thinking which numbered close call events are real or not, just think RHP's number one formula when guys tell you their cock size, you divide by 2 and plus 1

Quoting 'Meander' I nearly kicked it when I had my first seizure in 2005, that's about it. …Immediately following the seizure I sleepwalked about 3km through early morning Surfers Paradiseheading for work..unconsciously crossing roads, bridges, footpaths..until a passing cyclist pointed out the back of my head was bleeding. I was starting to wake up. He escorted me to the nearby police station while I realised what had happened.I still don't remember anything between the garage at home and that cyclist..it was certainly a wake-up call.I haven't neglected to take my Valproate since..

No horrific accidents here. My blood just has a tendency to clot so I've had DVT and pulmonary embolus (I think that's correct) it travelled through my heart and lodged in my lung.
