  Lived there for the last 10-years, just moved out last year, otherwise I would have met you for a drink, The Boat Club (not actually a boating club) but on the waterfront / marina and has music fri/Sat, also Torquay Hotel, across the road from the beach in Torquay, also has live music & great view. There are cubs there but never went there. 10km of beach if you want a swim.
