Herpes Simplex and Sex

November 12 2019

I have found out in the last month that I have the herpes virus, I have been with the same man for the last three years. we are in a sort of open relationship and as such he sees other women. Due to this fact and neither of us wanting to get him infected too, we have been abstaining from sex with each other. I just want to know if anyone has any ideas of how we can still have that connection sexually without actually having sex, or if anyone has any good ideas as to how we can completely protect ourselves in the process(not sure that's possible of course). We both love each other but sex is still a very important component of our relationship and as such any suggestions would be welcomed. Thank you. - Posted from rhpmobile

Has he been tested too? Who knows, he may have passed it onto you.

Most of the population has a herpes virus, basically anyone who has had a cold sore. The blood test is useless as a diagnostic tool. You have herpes simplex if you have had a breakout of the genital sores and they have been tested. As far as playing safe my understanding is that if there are no sores then it is relatively safe but not guaranteed that infection can spread. I have found that many gp’s are not up to speed on herpes, best advice comes from the family planning and std clinics, get good advice from professionals.

Everything usebi has said! Find a clinic that deals with this sort of thing on a daily if you haven't already. HSV can stay dormant in your body for years without any symptoms. It's possible that you were infected ten years ago and it's only just appeared, so don't go blaming your current partner. How many people have had a cold sore when they were a kid and then never had another? From my understanding it's still dormant in your body and you could have another outbreak if the conditions were right. Others will continually get them throughout their life, go figure! Have a look at female condoms, they cover part of the vulva too and may reduce the chance of skin to skin contact. Not sure what they're like from personal experience though.

Herpes can be detected by a blood test , usually you only have a break out when you are tired , stressed, it can stay dormant in your body for years before it presents itself. You can also go years and not have a rash at all, all depends on your body and your health. You can infect a person and not even know it. You can also treat it with medication, use condoms obviously to prevent spreading it further. Medication will stop rashes , but won't stop you having it. The longer you have had it rashes will get less and less, so you can not have a rash but still pass it on. Know your body and what it's telling you, keep medication handy and take regularly and you should have no issues.
